Data types
The Merlin Datawise data storage facility, comprising over 500 square
metres, is located in five data storage warehouses immediately adjacent
to the rail station at Colwall, Herefordshire. The facility has been functioning
in its present form since 1986 and is managed independently by on-site
professional library staff.
The Facilities
The facility provides a controlled and stable environment for the storage
of magnetic media, films, paper and microform. Temperature and humidity
controls maintain an environment within recommended ranges for each media
type.
Twenty-four hour monitoring of sophisticated intruder and fire detection
systems ensures maximum security of the stored data.
Mobile racking systems are installed in two of the units, one dedicated
to digital media where tape reels supplied with seal bands are stored
on hangers, and magnetic cartridges, CD's, etc. are stored on shelves.
The second is organised as a library facility where files and reports
are individually stored for ease of access or gathered in appropriate
boxes. Large scale films and plans are stored rolled in horizontal tubes
and low priority data can be stored in boxes.
Track Record
The facility has proved itself to be a secure, efficient and cost-effective
means for companies to store, catalogue and retrieve a range of technical
and commercial data. The systems which are in place to achieve this service
have been developed and improved over a number of years and the facility
has benefited from consistent experienced management, over the last fifteen
years.
The facility was built to service the needs of Clyde Petroleum plc, an Energy
Sector company based in Herefordshire. Merlin Energy Resources Ltd subsequently
took over the staff and facilities, while continuing to provide storage and management
services to Clyde. Merlin Datawise now provides a high-quality service to a growing
client base of Energy companies and Government agencies.
Even though located more remotely than some of its competitors, Merlin Datawise's
service has always been considered to be quick and cost-effective by data owners.
Our proven system for data retrieval, delivery and management provides a service
which exceeds the industry norm.
Response time
All data held within the facility (digital data, hardcopy information,
etc.) is fully catalogued and indexed to provide a response time of less
than twenty four hours. This has effectively ensured 'next day delivery'
to the data owners.
